How to choose the right spinning reel?

Even those who are not new to the issue of choosing fishing accessories, when buying a new spinning rod or upgrading their favorite gear, have to decide the issue of choosing a spinning reel. Having visited a specialized store, it will not be easy for an angler to make a choice. After all, a reel is a very important and mandatory attribute of any spinning rod. Before choosing a spinning reel and buying it, the spinner must take into account both the method of upcoming fishing and the type of rod itself. In this article we will look at the main types and characteristics of reels and make a rating of spinning reels.

Types of spinning reels

The main question in choosing the type of coils is to correctly determine what type of coils you need. The reel not only stores the fishing line, it is directly involved in proper casting and retrieving. Your choice will be influenced by fishing tactics, since the reel for jig and ultralight fishing should have different sizes, properties and characteristics.

Spinning reels are divided into types:

  • inertial;
  • inertialess;
  • cartoon

Each of the listed types is used in a specific type of fishing and is distinguished by its characteristics and features.

The reel is an integral attribute of a spinning rod

Inertia coils

They are considered an obsolete type. After the appearance of inertia-free analogues on the tackle market, they lost their relevance due to a significant problem in use - throwing the bait into the water continued to rotate the reel drum by inertia, after which the fishing line was wound into the so-called “beard”. Despite this, you can still find fishermen today who successfully use similar traditional models of inertial reels.

Spinning reels

This type is rightfully considered universal. In appearance, they vaguely resemble a meat grinder and are deservedly popular among fans of spinning fishing. In their diverse range you can find easy-to-use and very convenient reels of different sizes.

When casting using a spinning spinner, it is important to consider the way the line is wound on the spool and its feed, since it must lie very evenly.

Winding is of the following types:

  • cylindrical;
  • reverse cone;
  • straight cone.

If you practice jig fishing using braided fishing line, then the optimal type of spool is a reverse cone. These reels are marked ABS; their advantage is that the spool does not allow excess fishing line to fall off the reel by inertia, preventing it from getting tangled.

Inertia-free - the most popular and versatile type

If a spinning player does not have sufficient practical skills, a casting spinning reel is the best choice. Its distinctive feature is a small amount (about 70-80m) of fishing line on the spool and fairly uniform winding.

Multiplier reels

Reels are indispensable in the process of fishing with jigs or trolling; they are more powerful compared to spinning reels. They are used when fishing with heavy baits, since with a baitcasting reel the angler can catch even the smallest bites, even when casting the bait over a long distance. Fishing with this gear is used by experienced spinning anglers, and beginners are advised to first take a closer look at spinning reels.

Reel gear parameters

Let's highlight several main characteristics that you need to pay attention to when choosing a reel for a spinning rod:

  • the quality of the material from which the reel itself is made and its weight;
  • timber capacity and size;
  • method of laying fishing line;
  • gear ratio;
  • smooth ride;
  • presence of a friction brake.

A spinning reel is selected according to the following parameters: material and weight, smoothness of motion

Material and weight

The issue of selecting a reel for ultralight spinning rods must be decided in accordance with the characteristics of the class of the rod. This is the only way to truly achieve the necessary balance. In a balanced spinning rod, the center of gravity is at the point where the angler holds it with his hand, which allows him to freely hold it for a long time without straining his muscles and joints.
The coil can be made of metal, in which case its weight will be significant. An alternative to them are plastic reels - lightweight, do not weigh down the rod and are ideal for light spinning rods.

When casting over long distances, it is preferable to use a metal reel. The sliding of the fishing line along the spool is better with this model, which means long-distance casting will be much easier. The metal case is stronger, so the integrity of the drum in the case will be safe.

The disadvantage of metal reels is their relatively high price, while if you choose a simple inertia-free and multiplier reel made of plastic, you can purchase a budget model.

Forest capacity and size

When choosing a reel model that will match the existing spinning rod model, look at the markings for the spool volume: 1000, 1500, 2000, 3000... Size 2000 means the reel can accommodate a fishing line 100 m long and 0.2 mm in diameter. A fishing line with a thickness of 0.1 mm and a length of 100 meters is wound onto a spool with a volume of 1000. Using thicker fishing line requires selecting a larger reel.

There is no point in taking an oversized model if you will be laying a thin thread on the drum: there is no point in making the tackle heavier

The most popular models are 1500-2500. The size of the chosen reel primarily depends on the weight of the rod and the size of the desired catch. When hunting for perch, take a 2000 size reel for spinning, and a 3000 model is suitable for pike. If you are counting on large fish, choose a reel size from 3000 to 5000, since sizes over 5000 are used in sea fishing and in catching especially large specimens.

Method of laying and feeding fishing line

In inertialess fishing rods the following methods of feeding line are used:

  • worm feed;
  • crank feed.

A high-quality mechanism will allow you to evenly wind the line onto the spool without dips or humps.

It is important to consider the method of winding the fishing line. Winding is divided into straight and cross. With the straight version, the turns are superimposed on one another, which increases the capacity of the spool with small reel sizes, but there is a risk of dropping loops and the formation of a “beard”. To avoid incidents, a cross type of winding is used, although they, with equal dimensions, are inferior in capacity to straight ones.

Gear ratio

This characteristic is responsible for how many revolutions of line laying go through with one revolution of the reel handle. A value of 1:5 corresponds to 5 turns of the stacker per 1 turn of the handle.

This is a very important point in the question of how to choose a spinning reel.

In accordance with the gear ratio, inertia-free “meat grinders” and multipliers are high-speed - the gear ratio varies from 1:6 to 1:7.2, universal (from 1:4.7 to 1:1.6) and power (1:4 - 1:4,7). Catching large fish requires the use of power models, and high-speed models are ideal for ultralight fishing.

Smooth ride

During operation, the coil should not make crunching sounds, and the parts should not cling to each other. The ability to feel the bait, as well as how evenly the line will be wound onto the spool, depends on the presence of a smooth motion. When the line is wound unevenly, the bait will feel twitching and it will be impossible to cast long distances.

Friction brake: is it necessary?

Friction brake is an important option on a modern reel. It makes it possible to pull out a large catch on a thin line and maintain its integrity. Its function is to release the fishing line at the moment when the fish makes sharp jerks. The drag needs proper adjustment; its adjustment can be located on the front of the spool or on the back of the reel.

The rear drag makes the reel heavier, but at the same time easier to adjust when landing fish. Its front counterpart is considered more sensitive, although its adjustment process is more complicated than that of the rear.

Most reels popular among anglers have this option in their arsenal.

This function is necessary if you catch a large predator on a thin fishing line.

How to choose the right spinning reel?

If all the above characteristics are taken into account, and the question of choice remains unresolved, check additional parameters before choosing a coil:

  1. Take a close look at the handle; it should not have free movement.
  2. The spool should have no lateral play.
  3. Winding the line onto the spool should be smooth and very uniform.
  4. The line guide must not snap into place spontaneously.
  5. When the reel rotates quickly, no vibration should be felt.
  6. The friction brake must work smoothly.

If possible, place the reel on the spinning rod before purchasing it in the store and check the position of the center of gravity, as well as the balance of the tackle.

How to choose a reel for a spinning rod?

If you purchased a spinning rod earlier, then when purchasing a reel, we first take into account its parameters. Ideally, these two components should correspond to each other and interact effectively.

A rod up to 3.5 m long is used for fishing from the shore with medium and heavy baits. A reel with a spool capacity of 2500 is suitable for it. Spinning rods with light lures in the light style have a maximum length of up to 2.7 m. We select a light reel with a spool capacity of 1500-2000 for the rod. Pay attention to the weight of the reel in relation to the rod when choosing inexpensive reels.

The best reel manufacturers

When choosing a spinning reel, give priority not only to the price, but also to the brand:

  1. Spinning rods used in catching small fish - models Daiwa SWEEPFIRE, Salmo Supreme MICRO.
  2. The reverse brake on the Ryobi Tresor reel is instantly activated.
  3. Comfortable, durable and efficient Shimano Catana and SALMO Elite X-Twitch models.
