Which reel to choose for spinning

Fishing shops abound with spinning reels. Without advice, it is very difficult for an inexperienced novice angler to decide which reel to choose for fishing, and an experienced fisherman cannot always fully understand the innovations of modern fishing technology, so do not miss the guide below for choosing a spinning reel.

What to look for for a beginner

There are several criteria that are closely related to each other. Based on them, you can choose the right coil:

  • type and weight of fish;
  • length and power of the rod;
  • type of reservoir, casting distance.

Coil reliability Is the next criterion. Try to choose a reel of the most famous brand. And if you buy several of them, then it is desirable that they were, if possible, from the same manufacturer. In this case, it will be easier to repair it, find spare parts, or, in extreme cases, combine one of the two.

The third criterion is profitability... It is hardly worth buying for the first fishing, something from the range of Shimano Stella worth 1000-2000 dollars. Buy something simpler and practice. If you like it, then get something more serious. It is difficult to say below what price should not go down ... Probably not less than $ 50 for an inertia system.

In the store, it is still worth paying attention to some details.

  • For example, not very high quality inertial coils spontaneously close the bow... It is difficult to check this in a store, but try it anyway. Open the bow and shake the coil sharply several times, if the bow is closed, then this is not your option.
  • pay attention to smooth running... There should be no backlash, noise or jamming.
  • It's good if the kit includes spare spool.

How to choose a trailing coil

Very often, beginners are encouraged to start with an inertial coil. But I know fishermen who do not even imagine that there are such.

And vice versa, some of my friends use exclusively inertia systems. I have been using both coils for many years.

The spinning reel has several disadvantages:

  • does not work well with light bait;
  • a small gear ratio, it is necessary to work intensively with the hand when playing or posting on a predator;
  • beards can be formed when the bait falls into the water due to the release of excess line.

But there is also advantages:

  • flawless reliability;
  • durability;
  • high thrust;
  • cheapness;

Inertial reels have a drum with handles on the holder, which is attached to the rod. In addition, a ratchet brake and a brake release button are installed on the reel as standard.

The sliding of the drum on the axle depends on how the drum is installed. It could be

  • sleeve bearing (bushing - axle), the simplest connection, sliding depends on the grinding of the surface, may have a backlash.
  • improved plain bearing on cones (sleeve - cone), significantly reduces friction and backlash
  • ball bearing (sleeve - bearing), has the best sliding coefficient.

Bearing connection is definitely better, but less practical. If sand gets into the bearing, the stroke is noticeably impaired, and this can lead to system failure.

Drums are:

  • plastic
  • aluminum
  • steel

About the first I will not even say anything, the second are light, but, unfortunately, bend, the third will not bend, but heavy. I would prefer hardened steel.

There are not so many inertial coils available, but there are still plenty to choose from:

  • Stubla- the drum with a diameter of 130 mm is made of aluminum, rotates on two bearings. Suitable for feeder fishing, jigging, sheer lure fishing, as well as line fishing, or any kind of spinning fishing from a boat or shore. Manufacturer Ukraine. Price - $ 8
  • Nelma- The diameter of the aluminum drum is 114 mm and is mounted on bearings. Designed for line fishing, feeder fishing and any fishing from a boat. Has an aerodynamic brake, backstop, axial brake. Manufacturer Russia. Price: $ 75.
  • Neva- unfortunately it has not been produced for a long time and the plant is closed. There are Neva coils on sale, but they are all Chinese.

How to choose a spinning reel

Smooth running is the main parameter of a spinning reel. There should be no noise or vibration while rotating the reel handle. When buying new coils, this parameter is good for everyone. The trouble is that it begins to manifest itself afterwards. Especially quickly, smoothness is lost in cheap plastic devices. Therefore, it is better to choose coils with a metal body. They are reliable and durable. When fishing, you should hear the rustle of grass, not the squeal and crackle of the coil.

Ratio

This parameter, which I would pay attention to, in the event that you yourself understand what kind of fish you are hunting. If on any that comes across, then the coil can be with any gear ratio. If you take it seriously, then pay attention to the markings indicated on the coil. Among them you will see something like "Gear Ratio 5.2: 1". This marking indicates that the spire makes 5.2 turns per full revolution of the reel handle. This is a powerful enough reel for large bottom fish. For fishing pike, perch or zander, a reel with a lower gear ratio, in the region of 4: 1, is better suited.

Friction brake

As a rule, the clutch is located behind the coil, sometimes in front or on both sides. It would be nice to configure it correctly. The friction brake dampens the jerk of large fish during the bite and helps to avoid line breakage.

If the regulator is located at the back of the reel, then during fishing for large prey it can be additionally adjusted on the go.

For the initial adjustment of the friction brake, you can tie the end of the line to something heavy and pull the rod at 90-120 degrees to set the friction so that it works at about 80% of the load. At 100%, the line should break

Actually, for spinning rods with a length of three or more meters, the friction brake is not so important, because the jerk will smooth the end of the rod. But for short and stiff rods, the function is undoubtedly useful.

Spool

Spool - the drum on which the fishing line is stored. She winds up and unwinds on him when casting. The larger it is, the better, but it is desirable that it be metal, especially if you are going to catch a predator with a braid rather than a mono line.

Choosing a baitcasting reel

The baitcasting reel is essentially a mini winch. This is a powerful unit for playing heavy fish.

The main advantage of a baitcasting reel, besides its power, is that the line does not twist, like a bezinertsionka. The casting distance of the multiplier is approximately twice as long as that of the inertialess one. Accordingly, the price is higher. Then you quit - you pay more.

You should also be aware that not every rod will be able to withstand this type of reel, and not everyone will fit a mount.

Spinning reel for pike

The pike, during the zhora, is not particularly picky, and grabs everything that glitters. An excellent example, when my baby, lowered his toys into the water, on the pier, caught a beetle on them.

You will have to throw it often, exhausting the same amount, so I would recommend lightweight coils like light rods.

From the coils I would advise:

  • Daiwa sweepfire- Inexpensive, under $ 30, but works great on a single bearing. It is better to dilute the factory grease immediately.
  • Ryobi Tresor- has a good move, but play appears over time, nevertheless it has an instant backstop. Will last several years if you fish on weekends. Price: $ 50.
  • Shimano Elf - has three bearings in the coil on the main pair, which ensure the laying of the braid, weighs a little, almost does not play, but costs a little more - $ 100.

- definitely a useful article for those who hunt for a toothy predator.

Choosing an ultralight spinning reel

So, you have an easy spinning rod, but you need to purchase a reel for it. Please note that it does not have to be large and, in the end, fit harmoniously with the rod.

Rationally speaking, the size of the reel for ultralight fishing rods should be in the range of 1,000-3,000. Well, you shouldn't equip a light spinning reel of size 4000.

In order for the reel to fit into the entire tackle like a native, you need to check the balance of the rod. We take a rod with a suspended reel and place it on an outstretched finger. Not in the place where the spool is attached, but under the spool. If the rod remains in a horizontal position, then the balance is eating - fish.

In conclusion, let's see a competent video review on how to choose a reel for spinning from the Shcherbakov brothers. Guys often speak the case, listen.
