Hooks for crucian carp: which and how to choose the right one for different tackle

Successful fishing for crucian carp largely depends on properly assembled tackle. It doesn't matter whether you are fishing with a float rod or a donk - you will definitely need hooks. This important piece of rig can seriously affect the number of bites and the final catch. Therefore, we will pay special attention to how to choose hooks for catching crucian carp under a variety of conditions.

It depends on the correctness of the selected hooks whether the fish will break off at the crucial moment.

Sizes and types of hooks for crucian carp

Crucian carp is not considered a large fish. In 90% of cases, individuals are caught, the size of which does not exceed the palm of an adult male, and the weight ranges from 100 to 500 grams. At the same time, the crucian carp has one physiological feature - it is a small mouth, which is no longer intended for swallowing food, but for sucking it in. Therefore, the size of the hooks for catching this fish is selected taking into account these points. It's also a good idea to pay attention to their shape.

There are many classifications for hook numbering. Each manufacturer has its own parameter as a basis. For example, width, that is, the distance from the tip to the forearm. This is how the hook number is calculated according to the Russian classification (it is also valid in the CIS countries). It turns out that the closer this figure is to zero, the less he himself.

In terms of international numbering, everything is just the opposite. According to her, for catching crucian carp it is best to use fishing hooks, the size of which varies from No. 18 to No. 10 (according to the domestic - No. 2.5-5). Products of a smaller size simply will not allow you to make a sweep, larger ones may not fit at all in the fish's mouth.

The numbering of hooks may depend on its various parameters.

Which number is suitable for a particular rig is determined by the angler himself, taking into account:

  • the estimated weight of the fish;
  • tackle;
  • the thickness of the fishing line on leashes (the thinner it is, the smaller the hook size);
  • bait;
  • seasons, etc.

Another important point is the shape of the hook. Most often it is determined by the length of the fore-end, the pry (the distance from the bend to the tip of the sting) and the throat (the distance from the sting to the fore-end). From here, it is customary to distinguish the 4 most common types of hooks that differ from each other in shape. These are Aberdeen, Kirby, Limerick and Crystal. Any of the listed types of hooks can be used to catch crucian carp.

Hooks come in a variety of shapes

Fishing for crucian carp: how to choose the right hooks

Catching crucian carp only with hooks of the same size and shape is a common mistake of many anglers. For example, beginners often attach a standard hook with a rather long forend and a small mouth to a fishing rod. For a bait such as a dung worm or crawler, it is ideal. But for dough and pearl barley, it is of little use, because most of it remains naked, which greatly alarms the fish.

Here you will need a product with a short fore-end and a wide underfloor, which will be ideal for round-shaped baits - rolls of bread, corn, dough, etc. In addition, such attachments hold more firmly on rounded hooks. It is much easier for a carp to swallow them. Due to this, the number of bites increases markedly.

In no case should you have hooks of only one size and type in your fishing arsenal.

Moreover, if you decide to go fishing for crucian carp. When fishing for this fish, you will definitely use a variety of bait. Naturally, you cannot put a long dung worm and a thin bloodworm on the same hook.

You should always take different types of hooks with you.

When choosing hooks for crucian fishing, you need to take into account other features of fishing. For example, in the middle of summer, in hot weather, crucian carp becomes too picky. You have to use the lightest and most inconspicuous rig. Therefore, preference is given to miniature hooks (up to the "nesting" type, the size of which is # 16-20).

However, if in the reservoir there is mainly a decent weight crucian carp, then the situation is changing. Catching it with small hooks is ineffective. After all, catching a large fish will not be easy even with a float rod. A small sting will not be able to pierce his lip, and a crucian carp, having pricked against it, will only spit out the nozzle. Therefore, for fishing on individuals weighing more than 0.5 kg, hooks will be required, the size of which will be equal to No. 10-12 according to the international classification.

Float rod hooks

Crucian carp are most often caught with a float rod or with the help of a feeder - a rather catchy long-range casting tackle. Therefore, many fishermen are interested in what kind of hooks are more suitable for rigging such rods. Let's start with the "classic" - a fishing rod with a float.

For catching crucian carp with a float rod, hooks No. 14-10 are used

As a rule, the float tackle for crucian carp has two leashes. It is best to attach two different hooks to each of them. One with a longer or standard forend. Its size can vary from # 14 to # 10. As you already understood, it will target large animal baits.

If you plan to fish for bloodworms or maggots, and not for worms, then both hooks can be with a shortened forend.

A slightly smaller hook is installed on a shorter leash. Its number is 12-16 according to the international classification. The forend may be a little shorter, but the prying is necessarily wider than that of the hook on a long leash. After all, it will serve for plant bait, which ideally should cover the hook completely, leaving only an eyelet.

It turns out that the hook for catching crucian carp on a float rod should first of all be selected taking into account the nozzle. This is not difficult to do. It is enough to purchase several types of hooks in advance, the size of which, we repeat, will be no more than 10 and no less than 18.

The size of the hook is chosen depending on the bait used for catching crucian carp

As for its other characteristics, the most suitable option is different:

  • strength (for example, made of hardened metal);
  • an enlarged forend (about 2 times the bend length);
  • with a sting bent inward (reduces the number of gatherings);
  • thin but short point;
  • straight ring eye (provides a more reliable connection to the line).

Hooks for catching carp on a float rod should be dark, or better black, so that at the bottom of the reservoir the fish can see only the bait, and not them. Silver or bright (yellow, red, etc.) often do not attract crucian carp, but only scare it away. However, in some reservoirs, crucian carp, on the contrary, bites more actively on multi-colored jigs and hooks. But this happens quite rarely.

The best catch will be with dark hooks

Feeder hooks

Feeder hooks, in fact, should meet the same parameters as for fishing with a float rod. True, with this tackle it is still recommended to always use products of a slightly larger size. For example, number 10 or 12. In addition, there is one more wish for the hooks for the feeder. This is the presence of several grooves, resembling a miniature sting, on the back of the forearm. Due to them, the bait in the form of a bloodworm, worm or maggot sits securely on the hook and does not "slip" when casting or lightly touching the fish.

Hooks with a side tilted or inward tip are also well suited for the feeder. Firstly, thanks to the displaced tip, it is very difficult for the fish to break free. Secondly, she will feel it only when it is too late to do something. Thirdly, such hooks provide better self-hooking, which is very important when fishing with long-distance casting gear, where it is not always possible to immediately react to a bite.

For a feeder, it is advisable to buy thicker hooks, that is, with a wire thickness of more than 0.5 mm.

When fishing on a feeder, hooks are selected that are different from those used for a float rod

This is due to the fact that when fishing with such tackle, the risk of catching on any snag or branch lying at the bottom increases. A thin hook can break easily. Let's not forget that large crucian carp or even carp often bite on the feeder. In this case, a thicker hook will noticeably help when playing. If it is too thin, it will simply break the lip of the fish, ensuring that it comes off.

  • Experienced anglers advise changing hooks on any tackle after 2-3 fishing trips. Otherwise, they can become blunt and increase the number of fish descents. If some day has been especially catchy, then it doesn't hurt to tie new hooks right away.
  • To check how sharp the sting of the hook is and whether there is a need to replace this piece of equipment, it is enough to gently slide your finger over it. If you get the impression that the skin is sticking to it, then everything is in order.
  • Choosing the right hook for bait such as bloodworms and maggots is the hardest part. It must be small. For example, number 18 or 16. If you use a large size, then when planting a bloodworm or maggot, you simply spoil the nozzle, which in the water will look unappetizing for crucian carp.

After a couple of successful fishing hooks should be replaced with new ones.

  • Some anglers put a magnet in the box with hooks. It has been observed that such magnetized rigs significantly improve the bite. Believe it or not this fishing sign is up to you. However, it is very convenient to store hooks on a carp on a magnet. A piece of polystyrene or polyurethane foam will also work, where you can prick them.
  • It is not recommended to store hooks in a vacuum package. It has been proven that in this way they retain the smell of metal and substances with which they were processed for a long time. Carp, possessing an excellent sense of smell, can neglect the bait because of this. Therefore, after purchase, it is best to soak them in sunflower oil or a strong flavoring agent.

In custody

Professional fishermen are very scrupulous in their choice of hooks. We advise, at a minimum, not to save on this component of any equipment. Among the highest quality manufacturers, we will single out Japanese and German brands. For about 100-200 rubles, you can purchase a package of excellent hooks of 10-15 pieces. And it’s enough for a long time, and it won’t hit the pocket.
