Fishing on a perch lead

When fishing for predatory fish in many bodies of water, spinning anglers are faced with the problem of frequent breaks of baits when the sinkers lie between the stones at the bottom, hooks on the snag.

Until recently, the only "panacea" for the loss of baits was the use of offset hooks - but the most advanced method used, not only to avoid such situations, but also to increase the catch, was the gradual spread of fishing on the lead line.

In fishing with artificial lures using this rig, all its elements are very important - from the complete set of the tackle to the correct execution of the casting, posting, hooking and playing. All this will be discussed in more detail in this article.

Cast

In contrast to the classic jig installation, the diverter leader, due to the presence of outlets for attaching the sinker and the bait, has a greater tendency to overwhelm.

Therefore, casting should be done as follows:

  • A cord or fishing line is reeled up with a reel, making the minimum distance from the tulip (the last ring of the rod blank) to the attachment point for the rig with the main fishing line;
  • Slowly move the rod to the side, visually controlling that there are no overlaps and twists;
  • Casting is performed with a smooth lateral movement;

Postings

When fishing with spaced rigs, use such wiring as:

  • Slow, even with small twitchings - attracts perch best;
  • Standard stepped - most often "catches" pike and zander;
  • Jerk (twitching) - universal wiring for catching an active predator;

Bite

When using such a mounting, a predator's grip occurs, as when using a jig rig, at pauses or slowdowns in the movement of the bait.

Due to the fact that twisters, vibrotails or foam fish imitating food objects are not combined with the sinker, the bite is very clearly visible, both along the tip of the rod, and is perfectly felt by the hand holding the spinning rod

Jogging

Since when seizing the bait on this installation, the predator does not feel the weight of the sinker, as it would when fishing with a classic jig, the hooking is done after a short pause of several seconds - this allows the fish to take the bait better and thus provide a more reliable hook on the fabric graze. The bites of small and medium-sized perch are very often accompanied by self-marking.

Rescue

The fishing technique in general is not much different from the standard one used for jig fishing:

  • If there is a small perch on the hook of the bait, a grass pike or a small perch, the fishing is carried out by simply winding the fishing line with a reel;
  • If a large and rather aggressive predator is hooked, it is pulled out by the "pumping out" method - the prey is pulled up, moving the rod from the initial horizontal position to a close to vertical one, after which it is lowered again, choosing the fishing line with a reel. Perform "pumping out" until the predator is at a distance sufficient to insert it into the prepared landing ladle. With this kind of fishing, the main thing is not to start the rod when going far behind the back and when lowering the rod, quickly rewind the slack in the line.

Installation (fastening) of the branch leash

With triple swivel (blind mounting)

This type of equipment is the simplest and most reliable. It fits in the following way:

  • Tied to the bottom ring of the triple swivel is a piece of monofilament line Ø 0.14-0.18 mm, 30 cm long, with a drop-shaped or rod-shaped sinker at the end. The weight of the sinker when fishing in stagnant water is 10-12 grams, during the course - over 20 grams;
  • To the ring of the swivel located at a right angle to the lower one, tie a lead-out of a line of Ø 0.14-0.18 mm (for catching perch) or Ø 0.20-0.22 (for catching pike and zander). The length of the leash, depending on the fishing conditions, is on average 1-1.5 meters;
  • Attached to the end of the leash is a bait set on an offset or simple hook;
  • The resulting rig is attached to the main line for the remaining free ring of the triple swivel;

Using a double swivel (sliding rig)

Installation of sliding equipment, in which, unlike the previous one, instead of one triple one, two double swivels are used, is performed somewhat differently than in the case of a deaf one:

  • A leash with a bait is tied to one of the rings of a simple double swivel;
  • A small piece of fishing line is tied to the second ringlet with a second swivel previously attached to it;
  • A loop is made at the end of a short piece of fishing line, with which it is attached to the main cord;
  • A leash with a sinker is tied to the ring of the second swivel opposite to the one through which it is attached to a short piece of fishing line;

Without swivels (simplified version of blind rigging)

This option is most often used when it is mounted directly on the reservoir in the absence of swivels.

How to catch more fish?

In my 13 years of active fishing, I have found many ways to improve my bite. And here are the most effective ones:
  1. Bite activator. Attracts fish in cold and warm water with the help of pheromones and stimulates their appetite. Pity that Rosprirodnadzor wants to ban its sale.
  2. More sensitive gear. Read the appropriate guides for your specific tackle type on the pages of my site.
  3. Baits based on pheromones.
You can get the rest of the secrets of successful fishing for free by reading my other materials on the site.

It is performed like this:

  • On a line segment, the lines recede from one of its ends 20 cm and make a loop 30 cm long;
  • A sinker is attached to the loop with a cape;
  • A bait attached to an offset hook is tied to a long bend;
  • On a short bend, make a small loop for attaching the installation to the main line;

More sophisticated leash tackle options include Carolina and Texas rigs and drop shots.

Carolina rig

  • A sliding cone-shaped sinker (bullet) is put on the main line or cord, while its narrow part should be facing in the direction of the line's movement;
  • After the sinker, a stopper bead is installed;
  • A simple swivel is tied to the end of the main line;
  • A leash with a length of 0.5-0.8 meters is tied to the swivel with a bait attached to an offset hook;

Texas rig

It is similar in components to the previous one.

The difference is that the stopper bead and sinker are placed on a leash with bait, and not on the main line.

Drop shot

  • An elongated sinker weighing from 10 to 20-30 grams is tied to a meter-long piece of fishing line.
  • An offset hook is put on the fishing line and fixed on it at a distance of 30-50 cm from the sinker so that it is located vertically, and its sting is turned up
  • Silicone bait is put on the offset hook;
  • A loop is knitted at the top of the rig to attach it to the main line;

Spinning

  • Length

For coastal fishing, rods with a length of 2.4 to 3.0 meters are suitable, from a boat -1.8-2.4 meters.

  • Build

Best suited for catching on a drop lead are blanks with a fast and ultra-fast action, a thin and sensitive tip.

According to this characteristic, the blank is selected depending on the total weight of the equipment used and the purpose of fishing. For perch, which uses small lures and not heavy weights, the best fit rods of light and ultralight class with a test from 2-3 to 10-15 grams. When fishing for pike and perch with heavier lures, use forms of medium classes with a test of up to 30-35 grams.

Shimano size:

  • For perch fishing - 2000
  • For pike, zander - 3000

Ratio

For this rig, the reel must make at least 5 spool revolutions in one turn of the handle.

Number of bearings

As well as for the reels used in the jig, for the reels used in fishing with a diverter leash, at least 5 reliable bearings must be present, of which 1 must be in the roller of the line.

Main line

Material:

For fishing small and medium perch and a short casting distance, use a monofilament line. If the main purpose of fishing is larger predators - pike, zander - use a braided line

Section:

  • For monofilament - 0.22-0.25 mm.
  • For braided cord - 0.1-0.16 mm.

Section:

  • Perch - 0.14-0.18 mm.
  • Pike and pike perch - 0.2.0 - 0.22 mm
  • Color - transparent, less often black or other color to match the water

Material:

Most often, monofilament or more durable fluorocarbon fishing line is used for the leash.

The following are used as baits:

  • Twisters
  • Vibrotails
  • Foam fish
  • Less often, but small wobblers are used, spinning spoons

The bait tied to the diverter leash should not be up to 5-7 cm long.

Hook

When fishing on a diverter leash, both a simple and an offset hook are used. At the same time, offset makers are more common when posting in places with a large amount of grass, snags, various debris

The size and shape of the hook is selected taking into account the size of the bait

Bullet

Conical sinker used in Texas and Carolina rigs

Drop shot

Elongated weights, well passing snag and blockages of stones with a special clamp, which allows it to be securely fixed on the line and move along it if necessary

Tyrolean stick

It is an elongated plastic cylinder (stick) with a clasp at the top and a lead plug at the bottom. Due to the shape and presence of air inside, such a sinker allows you to carry out the rig through the most tight and cluttered places.

Long

Long is a special, teardrop-shaped sinker with rounded top and bottom surfaces. Most often used in a drop-shot rig.

Baits and lures for the diverting leash

Lure color and size

For fishing with a diverter leash, silicone baits made from edible and inedible rubber are most often used.

The color and size of the bait depends on the type of predator for which the tackle is designed, current, depth and weather conditions.

Perch

When fishing for perch - fish that does not differ in trophy sizes - use small twisters up to 3 cm long, yellow or lemon

Zander

The fanged predator is caught both on perch twisters and on similar, but larger lures of 5-7 cm in size

Pike

The pike gets on the lead line a little less often than the perch and pike-perch, preferring the largest and most diverse vibro-tails and twisters from 8 to 10 cm long.

Among the advantages of this equipment, the main ones are:

  • The ability to fish in places with a lot of hooks - in a flooded snag, in thickets of aquatic vegetation, in places with a rocky bottom
  • Allows for long and accurate casts
  • The use of this leash mount makes the tackle very sensitive both to fish bites and to the touch of various elements of the bottom relief - stones, snags, silty sediments
  • Due to the cargo spaced with the bait, the diverter leash allows you to carry out any wiring near the bottom layer, which is difficult, and sometimes completely impossible in a classic jig.

It has a diverter leash and several disadvantages:

  • Mounting the rig in a pond takes more time than for tying a standard bait with a jig head or a cheburashka sinker;
  • The posting of such a rig is slow and lasts a little longer than when fishing with a jig.
  • With sharp casts, there is a possibility of overlaps and twisting of the bends with a bait and a sinker

Fishing on a perch lead

Place and time of fishing:

For perch fishing, they choose places with stagnant water or a weak current near the grass. Places near deep pits, the middle of sharp coastal dumps, and shell rock placers will be promising.

Accessories:

To catch this predator, the very thin rig is used:

  • Spinning class light or ultralight 2.4 meters long
  • Spinning reel size 1500-2000
  • Monofilament line Ø 0.2-0.22 mm or braided line Ø 0.1-0.13 mm.
  • Sinker weighing from 10-12 grams. up to 18-20 gr.
  • Mono-line of leashes of equipment Ø 0.14-0.18 mm.

Lures:

Small twisters, vibrotails, slugs

Perch's preferred colors are yellow, lemon yellow, the color of "machine oil"

Since perch is caught in places with a lot of grass, it is better to put the bait on an offset hook.

Wiring:

If the perch is active, use a short stepped drive with a fine twitch of the bait with the tip of the rod during the drive.

Catching pike perch on a lead line

Place and time of fishing:

Pike perch is caught in deep channel pits with a hard rocky, clay bottom; at dusk and sunset it is good to catch fanged on the shoals bordering them

Accessories:

For pike perch, unlike perch, spinning rods with a large dough are used - from 15 to 30 grams. He chooses the length depending on the required casting distance - but usually the golden mean is 2.4 meter blanks

The reel, if bites of a trophy predator are possible, are set more than for a perch - size 3000. A rigid and inextensible braided cord Ø 0.13-0.16 mm is usually wound on the spool.

The line of the installation of the diverter leash itself should be thicker than in the perch version - Ø 0.18-0.22 mm.

Sinkers are used with a weight of 12 to 30 grams. - depending on the depth, fishing distance, current strength

Lures:

Medium-sized (5-7 cm) twisters, vibrotails, foam rubber fish.

The color of such baits should be yellow, golden or greenish.

Wiring:

When fishing for pike perch on a diverting leash, use the classic stepped wiring. With a weak bite or uncertain grip, the wiring is made slower, the number of revolutions is reduced from 3 to 2 or even 1.

Pike fishing on a lead line

Place and time of fishing:

Plant and thickets of aquatic vegetation, areas of open water bordering on such places, trees and driftwood lying in the water, deep pits and dumps in them.

Accessories:

For pike, which is caught on a lead line much less often for pike perch and perch when fishing, a pike-perch rig is used - a fairly powerful spinning rod, strong braided line, a reel of 3000 or more.

Lures:

Large bright colors twisters, vibrotails, worms ranging in size from 8 to 10 cm. Unlike other predators, pike responds well to combinations of white and red, green and red colors of the baits used.

Wiring:

Standard stepped wiring with elements of shallow and sharp twitching

The best leads when fishing with a drop lead

Dragging on the bottom

This wiring works very well for a passive predator.

It is performed as follows:

  • After casting the bait and exhausting the slack in the cord or fishing line with the reel, wait until first the sinker, and then the bait, will fall to the bottom
  • The rod tip should be lowered as close to the water as possible
  • Wiring is carried out by slowly winding the line - the bait rises slightly above the bottom soil, and the sinker of the rig drags along it, uplifting paths of mud that attract fish

The predator grabs the bait while paused or slowing down

Dash dash animation

Such wiring is a kind of dragging. The difference from the latter is that during the movement of the bait in the bottom layer, the angler during pauses twitches the tip of the rod.

With this animation, bites most often occur during pauses, when the bait, after a slow movement, begins to twitch convulsively

Aggressive jerking wiring

This type of decoy animation consists of the following steps performed sequentially:

  • After casting and dropping the sinker to the bottom, they make a short jerk, which sets the entire rig in motion;
  • Then, the cord is wound at different speeds, accompanying each of the spool revolutions with a jerk;
  • In the absence of bites, pause, letting the sinker fall to the bottom;
  • The series of jerks is resumed by changing the speed of the drive;

Trolling secrets

A retractable leash is also used when trolling

In trolling fishing, heavier sinkers weighing 40 or more grams and lures with a length of 15 cm are most often used. Of the lures in such equipment, special trolling wobblers are most often used, less often silicone lures.

The line component of the rig should also be thicker and rougher than when fishing from the shore - when fishing with a diverter leash for trolling, the mounting line should have Ø 0.25-0.32 mm.

Winter application

In winter, the diverter line is used not only on non-freezing rivers, diversion channels of thermal power plants, but also during ice fishing.

Winter rig with a diverter lead is assembled like this:

  • Ties a large jig, a heavy spoon or just a sinker to the end of the line used for vertical lure.
  • At 30-40 cm higher, a loop is made, to which a short (up to 10-15 cm) leash with a hook and a small bright color twister or a bundle of a large worm is tied

The fishing technique is similar to trolling - swings with a fishing rod alternate with pauses of different duration.

Catching with a diverter leash on the current

When using a diverter leash on the current, the use of demolition wiring is relevant. The technique for its implementation is as follows:

  • Rigging is thrown perpendicular to the direction of flow
  • Further, the bait and sinkers are pulled by the current until they are carried in an arc parallel to the coastline
  • When pulling the cord along the shore, the rig is exhausted using any type of wiring

This method allows you to easily fish quite extensive river spaces and find even a passive predator.

Fishing in still water

When fishing on a diverter leash in reservoirs without a current, a fairly thin rig is used.

Leads for lakes and reservoirs are selected taking into account the activity and type of predatory fish that they plan to catch - perch loves light twitching with the rod more, while pike perch and pike prefer more aggressive twitching lead.

A diverting leash is a rig that allows even in the most barkless to lure a passive predator out of its ambush and provoke a grip. A few shortcomings are more than compensated for by the catchiness and versatility of this installation, both when fishing for small perch and large pike perch and pike.
