Transport on the island of Ko Lipe

On the Koh lipe there are very few roads, and you can get around the whole island on foot in a couple of hours, so transport is not particularly needed. But still:

  • moto- Taxi (motorcycle and sidecar) ply the island, transporting tourists from beach to beach. You can recognize a taxi driver by a lilac vest. A taxi can be useful for the delivery of luggage from / to the pier and for newly arrived tourists who are poorly guided on the island. Fixed prices:
  • shuttle buses from hotels - in fact, these are the same motorcycles with a sidecar, but they belong to specific resorts, provide a transfer from / to the pier, deliver their guests to the beaches;
  • bicycles - there are few of them, they are offered to tourists for rent as a form of entertainment (hour - 50 baht, day - 200 baht);
  • motorcycles - they are mainly used for moving locals;
  • cars - there are very few of them on the island, and they are used as freight transport;
  • boats - deliver tourists from one beach to another and to neighboring uninhabited islands. You can rent them on the shore or buy one-day tours (see below for entertainment).

Accommodation options on Koh Lipe

Today Ko Lipe is ready to accept travelers with any wallet:

  • the most budgetary option is to stay in a tent on the island: travelers set up tents on the shores of Sunrise Beach or in specially equipped campings on Sunset Beach;
  • hostel, or hostel - only one was seen on Pedestrian Street;
  • budget houses / bungalows. For budget travelers, I hasten to inform you that in January 2015 we rented a decent bungalow from a family of sea gypsies 5 minutes walk from Sunrise Beach for 500 baht per day (price after bargaining, subject to rent for 10 nights);
  • rooms and bungalows with private facilities (air conditioning, hot water) of the average price category - 1200 baht per day. There are plenty of such offers even in season at Sunrise Beach, Sunset, Pattaya and in the central part of the island. Breakfast is often included in the price;
  • deluxe rooms - I liked the hotels Serendipity, Idillic, Anda Resort on the right side of Sunrise Beach and Mountain Resort on the left side of Sunrise Beach - perhaps the most gorgeous view of the Andaman Sea opens up here, and the hotel area is the largest.

Please note that some Ko Lipe hotels adhere to the childfree philosophy and therefore do not accept guests under 12 years old! Also, when choosing a hotel, make sure that there is no construction nearby, and that roosters do not live on the territory of the hotel itself (they are very loud). It is important that there is a canopy in the room above the bed (or the windows have a mesh) - there are a lot of mosquitoes on the island.

Food on the island of Ko Lipe

Food on the island is 1.5-2 times higher than on other islands in Thailand and the mainland. Today, Koh Lipe has a large selection of restaurants and cafes representing the cuisines of different peoples of the world. So, this is Thai (restaurants serving fresh seafood are especially popular); Indian, Italian, Greek, Mexican, Australian, American.

The level of service is very different and so is the price tag. Good coffee is brewed on the island - there are professional coffee machines at several points.

I hasten to inform the thrifty travelers that Thai BBQ is a very budget option for dinner (chicken wings from 20 baht apiece). Pancakes with different fillings perfectly satisfy hunger (from 30 baht per pancake). We also recommend fresh coconut ice cream from local dishes.

We advise you to pay attention to Indian cafes - prices do not bite. Well, and of course, semi-finished products help out store 7/11 (from 30 baht per serving). In general, if possible, it is better to stock up on food on the mainland.

And here are some food prices:

  • A kilogram of muesli - 250 baht.
  • A kilogram of oatmeal - 120 baht.
  • Milk packaging 200 ml - 20 baht.
  • A jar of yogurt - 20 baht.
  • Sausage pack - 56 baht.
  • The cost of a pack of drinking water (6 bottles of 1 liter) is 50 baht.
  • Beer - from 35 baht per can.
  • Fresh bread at the bakery - 50 baht.
  • Fruit is not cheap (for example, bananas 50 baht per kg, coconut - 50 baht, mango - 120 baht per kg).
  • Tomatoes, cucumbers - 60 baht per kg.
  • Mayonnaise - 25-55 baht per package.
  • Decent slice of pizza - 100 baht.

Internet and cellular communications in Koh Lipe

The Internet is now in every hotel, massage parlor or restaurant. The signal is quite confident (for example, it is holding Skype), but the speed is not the highest. If you need an excellent Internet connection, you can buy a SIM card from the local True provider (sold, for example, at the 7/11 store).

Health and medicine on Koh Lipe island

There are three on the island today clinics (hospitals) that work with tourists and solve emergency medical issues - two of them are located on Pedestrian Street. Are located nearby and pharmacies - The choice is average (prices are not the lowest), but it is still better to take with you all the basic medications you may need. salons there are a lot on the island of Kolipe, they are found at every step - prices from 300 baht per hour.

Ko Lipe and the Russians

Yes, Ko Lipe is little known to the Russian audience, but still there are Russian tourists on the island (in fairness, let's say there are not many of them). We did not find Russian businesses on Koh Lipe, and even businesses focused on Russians: not a single sign on the great and mighty, not a single Russian-language menu, not a single Russian-speaking massage therapist, and nowhere can we hear Russian chanson motives. And this personally makes me very happy - yes, I speak English very badly, but I want to feel that I am in another country ... As for travelers from other countries, it can be noted that many Germans and Italians rest on Kolip - mostly , young people are bright and stylish ...

Marine activities in Koh Lipe

There are no scooters, bananas or parachutes on Koh Lipe (and this, in my opinion, is very nice). There are travelers who come with their own equipment for windsurfing and ride on the left bank of Sunrise Beach. But the main pleasure of the sea is diving and snorkeling in Koh Lipe and on other islands of the Tarutao Nature Reserve (Koh Lipe is part of it). The equipment can of course be brought with you. However, the island is full of "one day tour" offers. Locals offer three standard snorkeling tours to neighboring islands:

Each "package" of the traveler includes flippers, vest, mask, snorkel, light lunch, drinking water, fruit. By the way, do not forget to bargain - they willingly drop 50 baht from the price.

Diving - the price of one dive is from 1500 baht (by the way, there are also night dives). It costs from 9999 baht to complete the course and receive a PADI diver certificate in Ko Lipe.

What to do on Koh Lipe Island?

  • well, of course, swim a lot,
  • admire sunrises on Sunrise and sunsets on Sunset,
  • in the evening at 6 o'clock in the Pooh bar to watch a reclining movie (admission is free, but it is supposed to buy a drink or popcorn),
  • visit a local Buddhist temple,
  • conduct leisurely conversations with new acquaintances at the bar (the cost of a cocktail is from 100 baht),
  • get high from doing nothing, swinging in a hammock,
  • do yoga (at 7 am and at 4:30 pm) on the territory of the Castaway hotel (almost the center of the Sunrise beach),
  • taste local delicacies - fresh coconut ice cream and roti pancakes,
  • take a photo session on a sand spit near Mountain Resort

With children in Koh Lipe

There is no animation for children in the hotels. Also on the island, we did not see any slides, or swings (only rope on the trees), or game rooms. Restaurants do not offer a children's menu. And, in principle, there are few children on the island.

The ecological situation on the island of Ko Lipe

The ecological situation on the island is improving (compared to previous years) - a waste processing plant was built on the island; hotel workers and volunteers regularly clean the coastline (by the way, you can become one of them - actions are held on Mondays; volunteers are provided with food and water as a token of gratitude). Some Ko Lipe restaurants have a cleanliness label.

When is the tourist season in Koh Lipe

The best time to travel to Koh Lipe is from November to the end of February. In other months, communication with some islands is interrupted and it is problematic to get to Koh Lipe.
By the way, we got to Koh Lipe by express boat from the neighboring Malaysian island of Langkawi. The road from Langkawi to Koh Lipe takes about an hour and cost us 100 Malaysian ringit per person (including transfer from the hotel to the port in Langkawi). The Ko Lipe - Langkawi road cost 750 baht (from port to port). I am attaching the schedule of speedboats from neighboring islands to Ko Lipe and back.

A few words about the beaches of Ko Lipe

The sea surrounding the island is beautiful: gentle, clean, rich in color.

Everyone can find a beach to their liking here:

  • Sunset beach (sunset beach: narrow coastal strip, currently large area occupied by hotels destroyed for construction),
  • Sunrise beach (my favorite: fantastic colored water, sand spit, nice hotels)

  • or Pattaya (the beach where boats arrive from the islands, but it is here that you will see gorgeous white sand-flour, beautiful water color; the beach itself is relatively uncrowded).

That, perhaps, is all that we wanted to tell about Ko Lipe. Are you now ready to follow your dream?

Koh Lipe Island is part of the Adang Ravi archipelago, located in the Andaman Sea at a distance of 70 kilometers west of the coast of Satun province (in the south it borders on Malaysia). On the map, its name can be indicated in different ways: Koh Lipe, Ko Lipe or Ko Lipey. Immediately next to it is the island of Ko Adang, and Ko Tarutao, after which the Marine national park, is located thirty-seven kilometers to the southeast. The island of Langkawi is forty kilometers to the east - but this is already Malaysian territory.

Koh Lipe island in Thailand, despite its small area (about two square kilometers), is truly paradise on the edge of Thailand. A little more than 700 people live on it, all of them come from Malaysia and are members of one tribe Chao Lei (Chao Lei), which is often called sea gypsies.

Koh Lipe island in Thailand practically unknown Russian tourist, and those who have been there, note the unusually clear sea and magnificent white sand beaches. This piece of sushi will be boring for those who love crowded parties and extreme entertainment. Daytime relaxation on the shore gives way to quiet gatherings in one of the many bars. By midnight, life on the island completely stops. Its attractiveness is added by the many uninhabited islets nearby, where you can spend the whole day in solitude - fishing, snorkeling, etc.

Despite the lively Andaman Sea around, you will not find much variety in seafood dishes. But everything on the plates is guaranteed to be fresh. Moreover, at very affordable prices. If you are not attracted by a permanent fish day, you can go to a restaurant, and there are many of them serving the usual European dishes. In general, the cost of a check in a restaurant is the same as for a check.

If you want to see something in Thailand that is not yet too trampled by tourists, you should hurry up with a visit to this island. In recent years, the pressure of civilization has intensified. For example, electricity is provided 24 hours a day, there is even the Internet (though the speed is "not so hot"). Bungalows on the shore are replaced by fairly decent hotels.

Beaches

Famous for its beaches. It has four coastlines - Karma Beach, Sunrise Beach, Sunset Beach and Pattaya Beach. For those who are unassuming and seeking seclusion, Bila Beach and Sanom Beach are recommended. There are even wilder and smaller ones. All sections of the coast are connected by paths and it will not be difficult to get around them in a few hours. You can stop wherever you like.

Sunset Beach

Sunset Beach on Ko Lipe (also known as Hat Pramong) is the smallest beach compared to the two main ones - Sunrise and Pattaya... It is located in a secluded lagoon with large boulders sticking out of the sand and water. From this place, stunning sunsets open up, gathering a crowd of onlookers.

Vacationers come here to relax and escape from the busy places on the island. The road from Walking Street to Sunset Beach takes no more than 10 minutes. Several restaurants and bars can be found near it, so you don't have to go far to satisfy your hunger.

Sunrise Beach

Sunrise Beach on Ko Lipe Island (also known as Hat Chao Ley Beach due to its proximity to the natives village of Chao Ley) has the longest coastline and spectacular views of the nearby mountainous island of Ko Adang.

Despite the fact that Sunrise Beach is less visited than Pattaya Beach, it constantly attracts tourists who love diving in shallow depths. This beach is perhaps the best place for this kind of activity. The large abundance of representatives of the underwater world, swimming in this area, will undoubtedly amaze vacationers.

Tourists visit it first in order to admire the most beautiful sunrise (this beach is called "Sunrise" in Russian) and enjoy the cool breeze on hot days.

Pattaya Beach

Pattaya Beach is called “Postcard Ko Lipe” because of its beauty. This main beach islands with 1.5 kilometers absolutely white sand with turquoise water. In addition, this beach is crossed by Walking Street, which attracts tourists from all over the island.

Some tourists visit Pattaya Beach in order to taste the menu in dozens of restaurants, bars and cafes, others - to play volleyball, frisbee, go kayaking, get a massage or spa treatments in one of the salons, or just take a nap in a hammock under the palm trees ...

In the evening, fishermen from the village of Chao Lei come here to catch crabs. This time is considered to be very interesting for visiting the beach.

Entertainment

Koh Lipe Island in Southern Thailand is quiet and patriarchal. From entertainment you will be offered fishing, diving and snorkeling, as well as excursions to the islands, of which in Morskoe national park Tarutao is countless - from uninhabited rocks to relatively large and well-lived.

In the evening, you can choose one of the many restaurants, focusing on taste preferences (European or), the level of service and prices. Most of them are located on Walking Street - a street that stretches across the island from Pattaya Beach to Sunrise Beach (not to be confused with).

Climate

Ko Lipe is the closest to the equator in Thailand. Therefore, there is a pronounced tropical climate in which there are only two seasons - rainy , from late April to November; and dry - the rest of the year. Best weather and the largest number of tourists stay on the island from December to January.

If you are not intimidated by the occasional rainfall and want some relative peace, go to Ko Lipe at the end or at the beginning of the high season - these are October and November, as well as February and March.

April to September the most risky period: there is a storm at sea, and the rains are prolonged. However, miracles also happen when there is not a cloud in the sky for a whole week.

Hotels

Koh Lipe Island hotels in Thailand very varied in terms of comfort and price. You can find a very cheap guesthouse with one air conditioner or stay in a room with all imaginable European amenities. It should be noted that during the low season, most of the hotels are closed and the choice is significantly limited. The minimum price per night is 500 baht. Decent number at the beginning and end of the high season from 1.5 to 2 thousand baht. At the peak of the tourist rush, prices skyrocket - they are twice as high. However, due to the growing popularity of the island, you should take care of booking a hotel on the websites or one and a half or two months in advance. Otherwise, you risk being left on the street.

How to get there

The answer to the question of how to get to Koh Lipe island in Thailand is both complex and simple. there is no, they go from the mainland. In (late April to November), the only departure point is Pak Bara Pier. In other months, you can get there from Langkawi Island (there is an airport), Pier near Trang, or from Phuket, entering all islands starting from Phi Phi. The airports are located in the cities of Trang and Hat Yai, the latter being more comfortable. For those who are not in a hurry, you can get to the ferry departure points or by. Preference should be given state-owned companies... With private traders, most likely you will make more than one transfer. Try searching for tickets on a Thai public transport booking service.

Using such a high-speed boat, you can move from one island to another, taking turns resting on any island you like along the route.

Koh Lipe is the most south island Thailand, a resort that is little known among our tourists. Nevertheless, on the first day on Ko Lipe, we met a lot of Russian speakers. However, the very next day and until the end of our "vacation" we no longer heard our native language. What is so interesting about this island, how does it differ from other islands in Thailand?

Koh Lipe, Thailand

Sea and beaches

The most important thing that now distinguishes Koh Lipe from other destinations is that the island has stunning beaches, one might even say one of the best in Thailand. Better only on. It is for the sake of paradise beaches and the sea that tourists from all over the world come here. Even some 20 years ago, the beaches were deserted and semi-wild, but now civilization has reached here. But despite the abundance of tourists and hotels, the beaches of Lipe are still beautiful. Thanks to the beaches, you can turn a blind eye to the other disadvantages of the island. We have compiled our rating best beaches Ko Lipe, gave the first place to a completely different beach, which is recommended by the guidebooks.

That feeling when swimming in the sea is perfect

If someone else hasn't seen in the last article, watch our video review of the best beaches on the island.

Nature

Not to say that on Koh Lipe there is some special outstanding nature, but the views are pleasing in some parts of the island. For example, when you cross the bridge from Pattaya Beach to the secret beach. Large stones, greenery, transparent turquoise water ...

My favorite spot on the Lipe

Sand Spit on Karma Beach

An atmosphere of relaxation and carefree

The third thing we noticed is the atmosphere that is atypical for Thailand. With the onset of darkness on the beach, everything changes, music is heard from dozens of cozy cafes, fire shows are held, kind half-drunk people of all nationalities walk along the shore, intoxicated tropical nature and the sea breeze, there are bright stars in the sky, and glowing plankton can be seen underfoot in the waves.

We came to the beach every night and enjoyed the moment. Very reminiscent of the evening Goa beaches... So if you find yourself on Ko Lipe, be sure to go to Pattaya Beach after 8pm. Immerse yourself in the realization that you are at the end of the world, on a tiny tropical island in the open sea, enjoy the warm breeze and bright stars without thinking about anything else.

Here and now

Such an atmosphere is very well transmitted, you instantly become infected with it and you yourself are already wandering along the beach with a slight smile, as if you are high. You smile at the oncoming tourists, just like you. I don’t want to think about anything bad, I don’t want to do anything. For all the time on Ko-Lipe, we did not do any work or blog, but simply relaxed, we did not have enough strength for anything else.

Walking street

The first place that everyone in Ko Lipe finds themselves is Walking Street. The street stretches across the island from Pattaya Beach and almost to the opposite Sunrise Beach. On the first day, you might get the wrong impression that the whole island looks like a street - cafes, massage parlors and shops. But this is not the case.

Walking Street is the liveliest and funniest street in Koh Lipe, I don't even know what we would do if it weren't for this street. All shops and inexpensive cafes are concentrated here. The rest of the restaurants and bars are located on the beach, and we have not seen shops in other parts of the island at all. Here you can buy souvenirs and get some fun, book transfers to other regions of Thailand and Malaysia, and find inexpensive accommodation.

Where can I book a transfer from the airport?

We use the service - KiwiTaxi
We ordered a taxi online, paid with a card. We were greeted at the airport with a sign with our name. Drove to the hotel in a comfortable car. We have already talked about their experience in this article.

What distinguishes Walking Street on Ko Lipe from its counterpart in Pattaya is that there are no prostitutes, lady fights, go-go bars and other debauchery here. I am sure that you can find entertainment here if you look carefully or ask someone from the local, but there is nothing like that in the open.

A large number of boats on all beaches

The island cannot be called heavenly. There are no bounty beaches on Ko Lipe. The beaches are good, of course, but not heavenly. There are many boats on all beaches. They are noise-disturbing, water-polluting, and dangerous if swimming outside fenced-in areas.

Ebb

At lunchtime, low tide begins on all beaches. During low tide, it becomes very shallow, stones appear at the bottom that used to be at a depth. On our first day we went swimming and were very disappointed. But when they came 2 days later in the morning, they could not believe their eyes, how everything looks different here in the morning. The main thing is to go to the sea in the morning. The tide starts in the afternoon and swimming at this time will not be so pleasant.

Low tide at Sunrise beach. Knee-deep

High housing prices

Housing prices are overestimated by about 2 times. The cheapest options are camping tents at 500 baht per night. Medium rooms in guest houses with a fan - 1,000 baht, mid-range hotels offering rooms with air conditioning and hot water - from 1,500 baht. These are the prices for accommodation here during the season from November to March. In the low season, the price tag is lower, but who needs to go to Koh Lipe during the rainy season, when the waves and cloudy skies intensify at sea.

Most of the hotels in Koh Lipe are built in the form of bungalows. There are so many options right on the beach. But if you booked a hotel not on the beach, do not worry, you can walk to the sea from the center of the island in 5-10 minutes.

Accommodation on Koh Lipe (2000 baht per day)

Overpriced food

Well, how would we understand that this is an island, everything is imported, but for some reason on other islands of Thailand, such as Ko Lanta, Ko Chang and even Ko Lan prices are not overpriced. And here most of the products are exactly 2 times more expensive than on the mainland. Especially at 7-Eleven. But on the other hand, prices in cafes do not differ from ordinary tourist restaurants in other Thai resorts.

7-eleven on Walking street Koh Lipe

Motorbikes and tuk-tuks

Their presence and movement along all pedestrian streets is very infuriating. Wherever you go, every minute someone will drive from behind or in front, and you need to move away, dodge, and then breathe dust and exhaust gases. It is impossible to walk along Walking Street normally during the day, mopeds are constantly driving back and forth. It is especially annoying when a tuk-tuker rides a motorcycle with a sidecar along a narrow street, as it takes up the entire width of the street. Well, at least from 6 pm they are forbidden to ride on the Volkinge and they do not go to the beach.

I remember that motorcyclists on the next “paradise” beach in Sri Lanka caused such irritation in our country.

Rubbish and ubiquitous contamination

This circumstance surprised me most of all on the first day. Ko Lipe is part of the Tarutao National Park, everyone pays 200 baht to enter the island. But then why did the locals so dirty their island? This is a national park, is there really no control at all? The fact that tourists litter, throw a bull somewhere or leave a bottle - these are all trifles. It is the locals who do the greatest harm to the island, that is, the Thais and Burmese themselves who live here..

Ko Lipe is not the same (s)

Such landscapes are everywhere, one has only to move 20 meters from Walking Street. You don't have to go far to see all this rubbish, devastation, abandoned building materials. So the island is littered, as you know, not by tourists, but by the Thais themselves. Or Burmese, for whom this is the norm, but then why are the Thais not doing anything?

I'm bastard with your NATIONAL PARK

The motto of the inhabitants of Ko-Lipe: where I live, there is crap!

Trash and general shit is the biggest disappointment and culture shock in Koh Lipe. Okay, still the filthy island of Ko Lan near Pattaya, where the situation is exactly the same, but at least there is not a national park. I do not know if any of the tourists paid attention to this, but I have never seen such " national parks". In the park, after all, the pristine nature should be maintained and preserved as much as possible. I really hope that there will never be such horror in the Similan Islands National Park, although the prerequisites already exist.

Garbage barge on Ko Lipe

And this is how they take out the garbage from the island. Well done, of course, that they take out, although not all, but why is the garbage barge placed in the very center of one of the best beaches? And it stands here not for 5 minutes, but for several days until it is full. Moored exactly 50 meters from the bungalow of the Lipe Power Beach Resort. How wonderful it is for the guests of this hotel to go out on the porch early in the morning, admiring the sea, inhale full breast fresh trash smell ...

Latest update: Sep 17, 2018

The Adang archipelago, located in the southern part of the Andaman Sea, not far from the mainland of Thailand and Malaysia, is often called the "Thai Maldives", primarily for its white sand. Ko Lipe (Thailand) is the only inhabited island in this archipelago. Tourists come here to enjoy the serenity and tranquility. In addition, the island attracts divers, because many marine inhabitants live near the coast - almost a quarter of all those living in nature. The island is the southernmost point of Thailand and many tourists are frightened by the question of how to get to Ko Lipe. However, the number of travelers is increasing every year. We have prepared detailed information for those planning a trip to the island.

general information
