Catching playful grass pike is, of course, very exciting, but sometimes there is a desire to catch a larger predator. Pike, as you know, are divided into shallow "grass" and deep "crocodiles". Herbs are small pike, weighing from 1 to 4-5 kg. But the minimum weight of deep pikes reaches 7 kg, and can fluctuate indefinitely.

True, in our conditions "infinity" is approximately equal to 12-13 kg. A pike weighing 12-13kg is a worthy trophy, you see, and it cannot be said that it is so rare. Of course, catching deep pike is not as catchy as catching grass, but the excitement when catching it is felt much more. Below you will understand why, since we will now focus on the targeted search and catch of the deep spotted predator.

Before going fishing, I advise you to imagine this 13-kilogram deep pike. Just imagine what this monster looks like. A 1-2 meter long log, dark, dull green in color with a huge, toothed head and long mouth. The appearance really resembles a crocodile. Have you ever caught a perch or perch with a wobbler? How do you like their blows? The adrenaline comes, doesn't it? Now imagine for a second the blow of this river miracle! What sensations will arise? And the fact that you need to look for deep pike in dark, muddy places of the reservoir adds even more interest to fishing. I would even say, in abandoned places, among large underwater snags, large logs, stones, among flooded large boards and near other large flooded objects at depths from 3 to 7-9 m. By the way, many fans of night walleye fishing had to feel the blows of such "crocodiles". Deep pike often visit rifts and underwater edges, and during night goose fishing there are often enough wobblers going along the depths. True, such bites end, as a rule, with the loss of baits.

First of all, we will collect the tackle for deep pike fishing. Comparing two fish - pike and pike perch, one can notice that the pike is a wilder and bloodthirsty person. Pike perch is such a strategist, guards prey at the edge, sometimes carefully pursues it, and at the right moment an attack follows. The pike rushes to prey immediately. And it does it so quickly and aggressively that no line can withstand her attack. It is necessary to take into account its such character when assembling gear.

Let's start with a rod. You need a rod of at least light class, or a little heavier, necessarily a hard action. As you know, the mouth of a pike is very bony, and you simply cannot cut it with a soft stick. Further, a good power reel, a spare spool is not required, but a powerful drag is a must! Believe me, even the most powerful zander bites are nothing compared to the blow of a 7 kg pike. Any artificial bait. It doesn't matter if we use a wobbler, twister or foam rubber, even a fish, even a toad, finding a pike ambush, the pike will definitely attack our bait. The lure is attached to the main line by means of a tungsten leader. This is a must, although often even such leashes do not help. To say that the deep pike attacks the bait brutally is to say nothing. A blow to the head follows, and, like a snake, a sharp turn with a bait in the teeth. A powerful blow is felt. The pike is able to cut the line of any thickness, so no leads from the lines! And it is advisable to use a cord as the main line, but if there are not enough skills, high-quality monofilament with a diameter of 0.4 - 0.6 mm.

Where to look for deep pike? First of all, in the rivers, in the main channel. Of course, in large lakes, creeks and bays there are also places that are very attractive for deep pike, but I almost never managed to catch deep pikes there. For several years I can remember only one specimen in 7.3 kg, the pike was caught in the river bay at a depth of about 8 m, near a pile flooded in the water. But this is an exception. In rivers, at the same depth, with a small current, I managed to catch pike much more often. Therefore, it is better to get a boat, and go in search of toothy in the mainstream. The boat needs a two-seater to feel more confident during a pike strike and long (20-40 minutes) playing.

I think the best place to stay for deep pike is large driftwood at a considerable depth. Here lies, for example, a log at a depth of 5 - 10m, and a "crocodile" may well lie near it. Moreover, the more creepy the site has, the darker, dimmer, and the larger the driftwood there, the more likely it is to meet a deep pike here. Fishing starts with a simple, even drive, then we go to the stepped one, try other types of fishing. You need to catch the area completely, from all sides.

Very promising places are areas at the base of dredgers, or pontoons near them, although they are inferior in the number of “crocodiles” living here to deep-sea snags. Not far from the dredgers, you can find whole heaps of garbage - wooden boxes, boards, construction barrels, etc. Pike also likes to hide in such places. Perhaps. If there is a dredger in the bay, then this is the only reason to try your luck in the bay.

The next promising area is deep-water stones. We are interested in large boulders placed in a cascade, among which deep pikes often live. And finally, we will explore all sorts of holes, snags, underwater thickets, and other deep and dark places.

The most frequent passing fish when fishing for deep pike is perch. The same deep - large, brown, only greenish in places, weighing about 800g. Pike perch is less common. Getting rid of passing fish is often impossible. But this also has its advantages. For example, I often could not find a deep pike, but I managed to successfully catch a perch. Or pike perch.
