Choosing a fishing line for spinning

Monofilament lines have traditionally been used. In the last twenty years, in some fishing methods, monofilament lines have seriously pressed braided lines. And in the last decade, fluorocarbon fishing lines have appeared on the market, which at first was positioned by manufacturers as a revolutionary material for spinning fishing. At the moment, these types of lines coexist on the market. In this article we will try to understand the peculiarities of using this or that type of fishing line in spinning fishing.

Choosing the thickness and color of fishing line for spinning

When choosing the thickness of the line, you need to pay attention to the following factors:

  • The strength and own weight of the fish living in the reservoir. You cannot go with a thin line to a body of water in which a strong and sharp or large one lives. Information about the size of fish living in a particular reservoir can always be found on the Internet.
  • The transparency of the water in a given reservoir on each specific day. Larger lines can be used in muddy waters. In transparent, crystal clear water, you will have to use fishing lines with a smaller cross section.

The choice of line color depends largely on:

  1. Of the season. Transparent lines are all-season. They are used in tooling all year round. Green fishing lines do not cause serious suspicion in fish only in late spring and summer. Fish tend to perceive brown lines as common mainly in early spring and late autumn.
  2. The color of the water and the bottom coverage in the given body of water. Not the main selection criterion, but it must be taken into account. It is not necessary to use brown fishing lines in a pond that is "blooming" in summer. In an autumn river with a clay bottom, green fishing line will look suspicious.

Advantages and disadvantages of different types of lines

There are no universal lines for sale. Each type of fishing line is intended for specific purposes, has its own unique qualities.

Monofilament line

Traditionally, a monofilament rod is used in spinning rod rigging.

  • It has minimal frictional force in the water, which results in low windage even in strong currents. The result is the ability to use lighter and smaller baits.
  • Monofilament fishing line has a low coefficient of friction, therefore less abrasion on the guiding rings when casting the bait and playing fish.
  • The stretch ratio of monofilament lines is much higher than that of other fishing lines and lines. The line may stretch and shrink slightly under the influence of the fish jerking. In fact, it acts as a shock absorber when playing.
  • The line can be visible or invisible based on the needs of the angler. In most cases, the angler needs to mask the line, but there is a situation when it is necessary to observe the movement of the line in the water column. Therefore, by choosing a fishing line of the desired color, the angler has the ability to control its movement in the water.
  • The price of monofilament line is much lower than the price of other types of lines and cords.

The disadvantages of this type of fishing line include:

  1. Relatively small, insufficient strength.
  2. Insufficient sensitivity.

Braid (or braided cord)

Not so long ago, it was advertised as a product revolutionary for traditional spinning. But as it turned out, this is also an extremely specialized type of fishing line. Positive qualities include:

  • Strength beyond other types of lines, which allows the braid to be used in especially difficult conditions (on heavily overgrown water bodies, on a littered bottom).
  • Zero stretch coefficient, making the line super sensitive, indispensable for jig fishing.
  • Long service life compared to monofilament line

The braided cord also has disadvantages:

  1. Difficulties arise in operating the cord in cold, frosty weather. Freezing water particles destroy the fiber from which the braid is made.
  2. Despite its overall strength, the line is susceptible to abrasion when casting and playing fish.
  3. The braid can only be fitted with rods equipped with guides with silicon inserts, otherwise the braid will wear out quickly.
  4. The cord can only be used on bodies of water without a large number of hard underwater obstacles, on rivers with a soft bottom.
  5. A braid is much more expensive than a monofilament thread.

Fluorocarbon line

This type of fishing line has appeared on the market relatively recently, therefore it has not yet received widespread use in spinning fishing. Outwardly, it resembles an ordinary monofilament fishing line. The advantages of fluorocarbon include:

How to catch more fish?

Network- the main element of equipment for fishing with jig lures, used in fishing on overgrown with grass ponds for long and ultra-long casts. Suitable for fishing, pike,.

Fluorocarbon fishing lines have recently been used as a leash that is inconspicuous in the water.

Popular manufacturers

Most rod manufacturers have their own production or order monofilament line from third party manufacturers. Therefore, the most popular lines are products of familiar, well-known brands.

The best manufacturers of monofilament lines are:

  • Shimano.
  • Owner.
  • Kosadaka.
  • Gamakatsu.
  • Milo.

Braiding manufacturers have specialized production facilities. For a novice angler, brand names may not say anything.

Top cord manufacturers:

  1. PowerPro.
  2. Unitica.
  3. Sunline.
  4. LineSystem.
  5. Varivas.

Manufacturers of monofilament lines have also mastered the production of products from fluorocarbon. Unscrupulous Chinese firms even sometimes try to pass off a line stretched on a special machine for fluorocarbon.

The best manufacturers of fluorocarbon lines:

  • Sunline.
  • Colmic.
  • Salmo.
  • Cottus.
  • DeLUX.

The fishing line is one of the most important elements of a spinning rod rig. However, choosing a line is just one of the stages of preparation for catching a predator. All elements of the equipment (rod, reel, bait) must be of high quality. And, if all the elements are selected correctly, fishing success will be guaranteed.
