Choosing a lure for spinning

The most important component when fishing for predatory fish with a spinning rod is the bait. If in the old years anglers were very limited in their choice, limiting themselves only to spoons of various designs, now the situation has changed radically. What kind of spinning bait is not used by modern anglers to catch the long-awaited trophy.

There are many varieties of spinning lures. Let's figure them out!

Let's consider what fishing lures are, their types, how to choose the right option for specific fishing conditions, how to choose a bait for catching a certain fish.

Types of lures for spinning

Below is a general classification of lures for spinning fishing.

Spoons

Spoons are traditionally considered the classics of spinning fishing. They are ideal for medium action spinning rods. The main types of spinners:

  1. Fluctuating. It is a curved metal plate that makes smooth vibrations during the wiring process. Such fishing lures are good for pike perch, pike, perch, asp and trout.
  2. Rotating. The design of such a spinner forces the metal plate to rotate and make sounds. It can attract a predator even in troubled waters. Most often, perch is caught on the turntables.

There are also varieties of spinners such as bladebaits, devons and castmasters.

Advantages of spinners:

  • The angler is not required to have experience in catching a predator.
  • High mechanical strength.
  • Acceptable price range.
  • Huge selection of species for catching any kind of predator.

Disadvantages:

  • Cases of hooks with tees and double hooks are frequent.
  • There are no universal lures for all types of fish.

The most famous bait is considered to be oscillating spoons.

These artificial baits are made from foam, wood or plastic. They completely imitate small fish in appearance. In the bow of the wobbler there is a paddle that makes the wobbler dive periodically. The size and angle of the blade are used to regulate the depth of immersion of the wobbler. Many wobblers emit various sounds as they move in the water: buzzing, hum, ringing. This attracts the attention of predators. The main types of wobblers:

  • Rattlins.
  • Walkers.
  • Poppers.
  • Cranky.
  • Gliders.
  • Fats.

By their buoyancy, wobblers are:

  • Drowning.
  • Pop-ups.
  • Floating (with neutral buoyancy).

Each type of wobbler is better suited for catching a certain type of fish and for fishing in certain conditions. There are no universal wobblers. For example, poppers do not sink at all, sliding along the surface of the water, so they work well when fishing for chub and pike.

Advantages:

  • Strength.
  • Good external resemblance to a real fish.
  • The ability to hover in water, imitating a sick fish.

Disadvantages:

  • For fishing with a wobbler, it is necessary to study the features and structure of the reservoir, the habits of the fish.
  • The high cost of quality models.

Wobblers imitate the appearance of small fish

Soft baits made of silicone imitate crustaceans, fish, newts, frogs and other small aquatic animals, which are the main diet of predatory fish. They are equipped with doubles and tees, offset hooks. Silicone baits are often used in conjunction with jig heads. In the process of fishing, the lure moves up and down and towards the shore.

Types of silicone baits:

  • Active. These are vibro-tails and twisters. Their tails create acoustic vibrations in the water that attract fish.
  • Passive. They do not make active movements, imitating the natural behavior of small animals.

Advantages:

  • Low cost.
  • Ease of use.
  • Fishing efficiency.
  • When using the offset hook, the bait goes through the aquatic vegetation without snagging.

Disadvantages:

  • Often damaged by stones and other hard objects in the water.
  • The predator can knock down the bait during the attack.

Silicone baits are flexible and soft

Other types of baits

There are several more varieties of spinning lures:

  • Foam fish. They are used exclusively with jig heads. Lightweight foam rubber successfully imitates a sick fry, which periodically rises from the bottom.
  • Spinnerbait. This is a structure made of elastic wire, on one side of which petals are fixed, and on the other there is a disguised hook. Spinnerbaits are not susceptible to snags, so they can be used for fishing in aquatic vegetation. They emit sound vibrations in the process of movement, attracting the attention of predators.
  • Flies. These are floating spinning lures that imitate insects and other living creatures that have fallen into the water. Designed for fishing for trout, grayling, chub and other types of fish used to feed near the surface of the water.

Spinning lures for different fish

Different fish prefer different types of bait. Here is a brief classification of them.

Spinning pike lures

Pike lures are attached through a swivel to the main line on a metal leash, which the predator cannot eat. Pike is caught with the following types of lures:

  • Oscillators. Oscillating spinners are not in vain topping the rating of lures. It is such a high-amplitude sweeping spinning game that pike likes. If the reservoir is deep and clean, then you should not even wish for the best bait. However, in the shallows, as well as in the layer of bottom vegetation, it is better not to use the vibrator.
  • Wobblers. It is better to choose large wobblers, at least 7 cm. Even a small pike can covet them. The most effective are pop-up models and wobblers with neutral buoyancy.
  • Silicone fish. The vibro-tails and twisters have shown themselves well, especially when fishing at depth.
  • Spinnerbaits. They are able to activate the bite of the pike if it refuses to use other baits.

The oscillating lure works well for pike fishing

For asp

Here are the best lures for catching asp:

  • Spoon "Castmaster". It can have different colors, so it is advisable to take sets of lures of different colors and sizes for fishing. For example, in sunny weather, dull colors are used, and in cloudy weather, brighter colors. The weight of the bait is also important. It has been noticed that the asp bites more actively on light spoons, up to 14 g.
  • Wobblers. They give good results when casting across the current.
  • Devonian. This is a spinner with copper or brass petals.
  • Jig head. In early spring and autumn, the asp is near the bottom, so it readily responds to vertical jigging.
  • Spoon "Three-sided". It quickly sinks to the bottom, passing all layers of water in which the asp may be.

Castmaster lure has many colors

For perch

We list the types of bait for catching perch as their popularity among anglers grows:

  • Rotating spoons. Medium intensity wiring is used. All water horizons can be fished with such spoons.
  • Small vibrators. They are best used for postings near the bottom. Not applicable in shallow water.
  • Spinnerbaits imitate insects that have fallen into the water, which the perch loves so much.
  • Silicone baits are good at great depths.
  • Wobblers. The size and type are selected experimentally.

For the chub

List of lures for chub according to the catch of the bait:

  • The most catchy baits for chub are wobblers. It is noticed that if the wobbler resembles a beetle, grasshopper or fly, then the chub takes them more actively.
  • Spoons. It makes sense to use only small rotating models.
  • Small vibrators. They work worse. It is necessary to individually select the shape and color of the spoon for a particular reservoir.

When fishing for a chub, the wiring should take place in the upper water layers or even at the very surface. The color of the bait is matched to the season of the year. For example, brown baits work better when the beetle emerges. And when the grasshoppers grow up and accidentally fall into the water, a wobbler or spoon should resemble them as much as possible.

The bait wobbler can look like a small bug

For walleye

The overwhelming majority of zander bites are on jig heads, on which vibro-tails and twisters are attached. The use of orange, yellow and light green colors is especially effective. Pike perch also often attacks foam fish. The pike perch prefers to stay near the bottom, therefore it is the jig-heads, making vertical and incoming movements, that most successfully imitate the fry in the bottom layers. Much less often, the capture of pike perch is recorded on spoons and wobblers. A prerequisite, in this case, is to lead a wobbler or spoon in the lower water horizon.

It is better to catch zander with jig heads.

Catchy lures for all seasons

Predatory fish bait works with varying success in different seasons of the year. The fact is that the fish also prefers different baits, depending on the temperature conditions.

Spring

This is the only time of the year when all predators are especially active. At this time of the year, they can be caught with almost any bait.

Summer

For many predators, summer is a time of rest. They have already spawned and enjoy warm water and free hunting:

  • Pike perch hunts mainly at night. Since he sees poorly, it is wise to use sonic lures such as spinnerbaits.
  • In summer, pike bite mostly small ones, so you need to use small-sized baits, choosing their color experimentally.
  • The chub remains active in the summer. The most successful is the time of flight of dragonflies, flies, butterflies and other insects. At this time, the chub can be caught with artificial flies and small surface wobblers.
  • The asp is at a depth and is best caught with a castmaster and deep wobblers.

In summer, it is better to catch zander on a spinnerbait.

Autumn

In the fall, all predators stock up on calories for the winter, so they have a real zeal:

  • The pike more readily takes on large baits, which are carried out at great depths. In warm water, models of spoons with an active play are used, and in cold water, spinners with a slower play have an advantage.
  • The pike perch is at a depth, so jig heads and deep wobblers are the best fall bait.
  • In the fall, the chub sinks into the depths after the fry, so it should be caught with small spoons running in the middle layers of the water.
  • The perch is caught with any bait.
  • Asp is caught on passive baits with slow retrieves.

Oscillating lures with active play are ideal for pike fishing in the fall

Winter

In winter, not all predators feed actively:

  • The pike perch is in the pits, not leaving the feeding place, so it is sometimes simply impossible to pick up an artificial bait for it.
  • Pike is best caught in winter with slow spinners and jig heads with artificial fish.
  • Perch can be caught with a wide variety of lures, but vertical spoons work best.
  • Asp and chub are practically not caught.

Use vertical lures for perch fishing in winter.

Choose predator lures in accordance with the nature and behavior of a particular fish, the season of the year and the characteristics of the reservoir. Then you will surely be lucky in catching river predators.
