Choosing a spinning rod for fishing - an overview of important parameters and the best models

When choosing a spinning rod, you need to clearly understand for yourself that there are no universal models. But how to choose exactly the model that suits you? Fishing shops today are full of variety. And how not to get lost here?

Spinning- a rod with guides and a reel mount (inertia, inertia or multiplier). Fishing is carried out with artificial baits, which behave like fry - the main prey of predatory fish.

1. Rod length

The length of the spinning rod affects the casting distance, the ease of playing and the comfort of your movement in the place where you are going to fish. It is from this factor that you need to build on when choosing a rod.

The overgrown bank of a small river requires a shorter length, but once you find yourself on the spacious sandy shore of the lake, you can choose a more massive tackle.

Special mention should be made of fishing from a boat. Here you also need to take a rod with the shortest length, since otherwise it will be inconvenient for you to pull the fish towards you, and even to take up spinning in general. The best option would be to buy spinning rods of different sizes.

For fishing from the shore, choose a longer spinning rod (2.7-3.5 meters), for fishing from a boat shorter (2.1-2.7). But fishing with a long spinning rod on a densely wooded shore is inconvenient, keep this in mind when choosing a spinning rod for fishing from the shore.

2. Rod whip materials

  • CFRP. Strong enough, resilient and flexible. Disadvantages: high cost and carbon fiber conducts electricity perfectly, so you need to be careful during thunderstorms.
  • Fiberglass. Strong, bends quite well. Among the disadvantages: it has a large specific gravity, therefore it is inexpensive.
  • Composite rods. Consist of glass and carbon fiber.

All three options are good to use, the choice is a matter of taste and special cases.

3. Coil

Let's decide on financial possibilities. Cheap reels are usually made of plastic and break down very quickly. Coils with metal parts are much more durable. Such models are an order of magnitude higher - but they are worth it. Nevertheless, an inexpensive option, you can always find a middle ground.

The choice of coil depends on your goals. Are you hunting big fish? Please choose power coils. Enough of the little things? Then you can buy something lighter and, accordingly, cheaper.

The reel must match the length of the rod. When purchasing, carefully consider characteristics such as weight, spool capacity and number of bearings.

4. Rod test

The test, or test value, refers to the power of the rod. It is measured in grams or fractions of an ounce. In accordance with this parameter, rods are:

  • Ultralight (up to 6 grams)
  • Lightweight (up to 22 grams)
  • Medium (up to 45 grams)
  • Heavy (over 45 grams)

These divisions are very conditional. But when buying, you still have to decide on the weight of the intended bait.

5. Build

Slow action of the spinning rod

In terms of structure, spinning rods are divided into:

  • fast
  • average
  • slow

Fast sticks are considered the best.

You can check the flexibility of the swing of the spinning rod right in the store. Only the upper part should bend.

How does the choice of rod depend on the fishing method?

The choice, micro-jig and other fishing methods differ and the main attention should be paid to the fishing method:

  • what is the weight of the bait;
  • how deep to do the wiring;
  • place for fishing: from the shore or from a boat;
  • bodies of water with or without flow.

On a densely overgrown shore it will be difficult for you to fish with a long rod; most likely, the spinning rod will be required to make not very distant, but point casts.

When buying, you need to take into account the bait test, casting distance. Also, spinning rods of small and medium length take up less space, they are comfortable and lighter in weight.

But, on the other hand, it is impossible to cast long distance with a short rod, and this is very inconvenient when catching a trophy specimen of an especially large size. It is better to use a longer rod from the shore, and shorter from a boat.

First of all, when choosing a spinning rod, you need to rely on the conditions of your future fishing: from a boat or from the shore, on a large predator (with large baits) or on a smaller one.

But the Chinese models of spinning rods must be chosen with great care. Some models can break even during the most ordinary casting, unable to support their own weight. Check the strength of the rod you buy carefully and be sure to look at a few options before deciding on the one you buy.
